PhD - December 3, 2019
On December 3, 2019, I presented my PhD thesis at the
University of Manitoba. I was thrilled to welcome my advisor Dr. Wallin. She
flew from her work at the University of Saskatchewan to Winnipeg to be part of
my presentation. My other two U of M committee members, Dr. Mignone and Dr. Fitznor,
were at the university that day to hear my PowerPoint presentation. After my
presentation I answered several questions presented by my advisors. I then left
the room which gave my advisors the opportunity to discuss my presentation.
When they called me back in I was told that I now was a doctor. I was thrilled!
It was wonderful to have my sister and two friends join my presentation. Despite
my new brain cancer, I was excited that my PhD thesis was accepted. It is hard
to believe, but I now am Dr. Christine Penner!
Dr. Wallin was a wonderful advisor.
Dr. Fitznor, Dr.Mignone, and Dr .Wallin
were members of my committee.
I called my husband to let him know that
I now was a doctor!
I was thrilled to see Alysha, my PhD friend,
attend my presentation.
Deb, Alysha, and my sister Bev came to
hear my presentation.
My dad...
...and my mom were thrilled to hear about
me becoming Dr.Penner.
Wonderful pictures and such a great pleasure to hear that the University of Manitoba has formally awarded your doctorate degree. Through your work with Grandmothers, you have helped me to see the deeper significance of programmatic approaches within the women's sector - as a critical tool in development - sa lahat mundo (the world over). In every setting there are locally defined or determined pathways for development. Challenges and opportunities that are in part driven by functional Ethnoecology. You have gone to the heart of the challenges in Manitoba and internationally. Through our work in the Philippines, under women-led leadership we continue to explore the needs of women and the opportunities for a better world through women. The other day, I found your paper from the course in 2004. Reading it, I was reflecting that as well as being your professor, I have also been your student. Love Paul and Marivic
