Low Blood Platelets, June 15-30, 2018

On Wednesday, June 13, 2018, I went to the Health Sciences Centre to get a blood test. Unfortunately I was told that my study drugs had affected my blood results. Since my blood platelets were critically low I was taken off my liquid drugs and told to stop using my daily needles which thin my blood. Since then I have noticed many bruises on my body. I now continue to go for weekly blood tests as they monitor my progress.

Since I stopped taking my liquid drugs in the middle of June, my blood platelets, my hemoglobin, and my white blood cell levels have slowly started to improve. As I still have some very low blood platelets I continue to get many bruises on my body. I went to see Dr. Pitz on Friday, June 29, 2018. I was told to stay off of liquid drugs but to start taking daily needles again to prevent blood clots. I continue to go to the Health Sciences Centre every Wednesday morning to get blood tests.

Although my lab results are out of whack, I feel good. For the first time in my life I attended Relay for Life which is a fundraiser for the Canadian Cancer Society. This walk took place on Friday, June 15, at the arena in Beausejour, Manitoba. I had to wear a face mask because my low white blood cell counts increased my risk of getting an infection. This didn't stop me. I was thrilled when I found out that the Phys Ed teachers I had worked with at Sisler High School were coming to this walk to support me. We had a lot of fun – many walks, many chats, great food, wonderful entertainment, and great music. This was the first time I had been to a cancer walk and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I was touched by the love and support of many people who helped organize this event. This certainly was a highlight for me.

I always appreciate all the time I have to spend with family and friends. I prepared a lunch basket to celebrate my sister Bev's birthday. My birthday time with Bev was a little belated but we had fun. We went for a walk along the Red River then sat down and had lunch at a picnic table beside the river. We chatted for a long time then went to buy ice cream cones for dessert. What fun we had – lots of chatting and laughing! A few days later we had a birthday party for my son Ryan, a birthday party for my sister-in-law Anne and me, and a beautiful outdoor BBQ lunch on Broadway with Bev and her child Ari. Now that I am not working anymore my husband and I spend much more time at our summer cottage. I thank God every day for all the dear people in my life.

We all taught Phys Ed together at
Sisler High School - Jonathan, me, Mike, and Colin.
It was fun walking and talking with them
in this Relay for Life cancer walk.

Colin's wife Sue organized this cancer walk.

Sue's father also has cancer.

My sister Bev was my driver. She also had fun!

At the end of the school year we took students
hiking in the Rocky Mountains.

I was touched by all the love and kindness
I was given at the cancer walk.
